HAPPY~HEALTHY~HARMLESS~HELPFUL~HEAVEN

These five attributes live inside each one of us. It isn’t a matter of developing them or finding them or creating them. It’s simply a matter of uncovering them. Acknowledging them. Accepting them.

The Presence of Love. Happiness and Joy welling within us when we allow it.

The Energy of Love. Health and Well Being, a natural state of being that is our gift from God.

The Essence of Love. Harmlessness personified by kindness that flows constantly through us.

The Decision for Love. Helping others to find their inner flowers becomes our greatest joy.

The State of Love. Heaven is a state of mind and dwells within us right here, right now.

We may occasionally recognize these attributes in ourselves, but usually we let them pass by with little or no attention. What if we paid attention? What would we see? What would be our experience?

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

AFRAID OF CHANGE? NOT ME!

Journaling is an effective tool for mind re-training. In a journal we can, over time, see for ourselves where our fears lie and ask for help in releasing them. A blessings journal or section of our journal will help us remember what is good in our lives so we can begin to focus more fully on the positive aspects of ourselves and our lives. It is impossible to be grateful and fearful at the same time. And even those things which we fear can be seen as tools for our growth and therefore something for which to be thankful.

Forgiveness is an important tool for mind changing as well. If we can practice forgiving ourselves and everyone in our lives by letting go of the past and releasing our anxiety about the future, the thought of changing our minds will be much less fear inducing.

Another tool is being in the NOW. In this moment life is perfect. As all the great teachers teach, the past is over, the future is not here and Now Is All There Is. An affirmation I use daily and sometimes hundreds of times in a day depending upon the kind of day I’m having is, “God is the Love with which I experience this moment.” And then I focus with love only on what is happening right now. Whether it’s doing the dishes, working at the computer, having a conversation, vacuuming the floor, eating a meal, falling asleep, awakening in the morning, driving to a destination, we can do it all with conscious intention and God’s pure love. With this affirmation the past falls away and the future doesn’t exist.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

THE DANCE (A Parable)

THE DANCE

A rainbow arcs from here to Heaven.
Let’s dance across it in the promises of God.

The child sat in the hall just outside her parents’ bedroom.  The door was open a crack.  With one bare foot she softly kicked it wider.  She curled her knees up to her chest, hugged herself and rocked in silent rhythm to the dark and dangerous dance she saw her parents performing with each other.

As if in slow motion her mother swung her arm back and threw the hairbrush.  It thudded dully against the wall.  Her mother’s voice rose in pitch as she turned her body toward her husband and flung words that pierced the child like sharp arrows  Though all the words weren’t clear to the child, their meaning was.  The meaning was anger.  The meaning was hate.  She saw her father stop her mother’s arm with his powerful grip as it swung toward him.  Her parents’ voices joined together in a tight duet of raging emotions, words overlapping so quickly it was impossible to tell who was speaking.  One thing the child knew.  No one was listening … except her.

She heard the dreaded words from her mother, “I’m leaving you!”  Her father threw his arms around her mother holding her tightly against his chest as her mother tried in vain to free herself from his tight grasp.  They rocked this way in a painful dance, for a time that spanned forever in a child’s eyes. Her mother’s sobs broke her heart.  Her father’s harsh tone scraped against her insides like his unshaved jaw against her delicate cheek. Only that was fun. This was searing pain.  This dance was not new to the child, but each time she saw it and each time she heard the scary words, she died a little more.

Tonight something changed inside her.  She did something she hadn’t had the courage to do before.  She staggered to her feet, stood in the doorway, held out her hands, palms up like a street urchin begging for alms and cried out, “Mommy!  Daddy!  Stop it!”  Her small face was scrunched up tight and tears poured from her eyes.  She faced them for an instant longer, then whirled and ran to her bedroom and slammed her door.

The silence following her entreaty echoed in the deadly quiet of the night.  Within seconds her bedroom door opened and the hallway light flooded her room. Her mother ran to her.  Her father switched on her bedroom light. Before long she was wedged lovingly between her parents on her bed.  “Oh, baby, I’m so sorry,” her mother choked softly.

“We didn’t see you there,” her father said, his voice cracked with emotion.  “But that’s no excuse.”

“Don’t you love my Mommy?” the child asked in a small voice?  “Don’t you love my Daddy?”

“Of course I do!” her parents cried in unison.  They rocked her in their arms and began a new dance that included the three of them and changed the timbre of the night from terror to remorse and for the child, hope.

The child saw then, what her parents didn’t seem to notice, a heavenly light that encircled them and warmed the little girl from the inside out.  As is the way with children, fear faded quickly from her mind and joy lit her face.  She giggled now for this was a new moment and all was forgiven.  She saw her mother’s lips twitch as she looked back at her father.  As her father’s eyes stared straight into her mother’s, they softened and then twinkled.  In unison her parents burst out laughing.

“Family hug!” the child cried.  Her parents rose from the bed and sandwiched her between them and they created another new dance. This one filled with light and joy.  Together the three of them circled the room in an awkward two step in time to the beautiful music of healing laughter.

Somehow the child knew the past was over and her mother and her father had learned something important.  If she had had the words to express it, it would be this; It’s okay to disagree, but it’s not okay to hate.  And it’s not okay to attack your children with your pain.

As the girl grew into a woman and became a mother herself, she never forgot that night. Each evening before she and her husband tucked their own children into bed, she cried out the now familiar words, “Family hug!”  Then the parents clasped their arms around their children and the children around each other.  And together they danced around the room in an ungainly shuffle, nearly losing their balance as they shrieked with joyful laughter.  And the child inside the woman smiled at the heavenly light that encircled her beloved family and warmed her from the inside out.

THE END

I dedicate this fictional story to my daughters who experienced my dysfunctional relationship with their father. Sadly, our story wasn’t as simply resolved as this one. I saw myself as a mentally abused wife and I believed my fight to protect myself and my daughters was the right thing.  I didn’t know what I was doing to my children. They were six and twelve when I left the dance. They are in their thirties now, but still the battles that they witnessed linger in their minds and touch them in ways I never imagined.

WHAT I WOULD TELL MY CHILDREN

A friend invited me and several others to post an entry on her blog entitled, What I Would Tell My Children Before I Die.  My children are grown.  I wish I had been offered this challenge when they were small. But even though they are adults, I do have things to say to them. Below is an excerpt.

For the full post go to http://notesalongthepath.wordpress.com. This would be a great exercise for everyone.  Even if we don’t have children, we should take the time to think about what we would say to them if we did, because these are the same wisdoms we should offer everyone, including ourselves.  These are the loving thoughts that perhaps we wished our parents had gifted to us.  When we offer something loving to our children, and then extend it to the world great healing happens.  Think about a world where we love and accept and enjoy and forgive each other just as we do our children.  We allow the children to make mistakes.  We accept that the children have lessons to learn and we are willing teachers. We immediately want to console a crying child. Who doesn’t want to hug a child?  Try to see everyone as a child, including yourself and see if your perception of the world doesn’t change.

Excerpt What I Would Tell My Children Before I Die

I would tell my daughters that they are a gift; a gift to me, to each other and to the world.  And as a gift they have certain responsibilities. They have the responsibility to be happy and to share that happiness with each other and with everyone they encounter.  They have a responsibility to understand the power of their energy in the world.  When they are allowing peace and love into their lives, that peace and love flows through them and helps to heal everyone and everything.  Since peace and love and happiness is their natural state, not fear and anger and guilt, it’s quite a simple matter to remember that when they are in a state of mind other than love, they must simply, and as soon as they are able, choose again.

I would tell my daughters that it isn’t so much what they do here, but what’s in their hearts when they do it.  And even if their intentions aren’t perfect, God’s love will make the necessary corrections and every blessing they have ever offered or tried to offer, perfect or imperfect, will be saved for them.

I would tell my daughters that they are not their bodies, but they have a responsibility to love and care for their bodies.  Their bodies serve a purpose in helping make the world a better place and their lives easier if they allow it.  They must enjoy their body and value it, not for its size or shape, but for its true design.  Their smile can express kindness and love.  Their voices can speak for those who can’t.  Their eyes can radiate joy. Their hands can offer help and hope. Their arms can hug a child. Their feet can take them wherever they are needed and wherever they need to be.  They should eat with healthy enjoyment.  They should exercise until it feels good. They should play with delight.  They should be grateful for their health. They should work with purpose and a sense of fun.  They should take the time to smell the lilacs, breathe in the beauty and feel the textures of life.  When they use their bodies in this way, they will always be beautiful.

I would tell my daughters to never forget their spirit.  Breathe. Pray.  Meditate. Live a joyful life in each moment.

BLESS AND BE BLESSED

Smile gently, soften your vision and your heart and lay your Holy, silent blessing upon the next person you see.  And then the next and don’t stop until every Child of God brought before you receives their Gift.  The clerk at the grocery store, the person who cuts you off in traffic, your friends, your family, your co-workers.  The list is endless.  And then take note of how you feel.   Doesn’t a calm and quiet feeling of peace and gratitude fill your being? Can you not suddenly see that your power to change the world lies in simply dispensing blessings right here, right now?  And who gets the highest blessing from your act of gentle kindness?  You, of course.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

TURN YOUR LIFE AROUND

If we smile gently at every negative thought and then immediately put another, more loving thought in its place, the thought that holds us back will disappear. In this way we will have trained ourselves to a new way of thinking. One in which we are no longer the victim, but an empowered being who is helpful and productive and free from a past that no longer serves us.

We belong in a place of quiet, calm, peace, joy and absolute love.  That is our true calling.  This is our true home.  Yesterday is over.  Tomorrow never comes.  Now is where we live and now is always perfect.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

HAPPINESS IS A SIMPLE MATTER

Though it is not easy, it is very simple to be happy.  We need do nothing, but simply be willing to accept our inheritance of peace and joy.  It takes some mind training for we have a tendency to slip off into fear whenever we lose focus.  We have taught ourselves to believe in the ego’s limited laws and to forget about God’s unlimited laws. But with patience, kindness and gentle forgiveness toward ourselves and the world, we can remember we are entitled to miracles and so open ourselves to the unlimited laws of God’s grace.  Simply be willing to accept that you might possibly be mistaken in how you see yourself and the world. Allow the possibility that you are deserving of God’s Love and even more, that it could really be true that you are His Love.  Do this and the way will open.  You can now live by the powerful and loving laws of God, which transcend the little laws of the ego.  And as you do, see with joy and delight that the world’s insane laws of separation and injustice, of scarcity and sickness and death, of suffering and violence are rendered harmless to you.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

IF YOU ONLY KNEW!

The good news is that happiness is a choice and one we can make every moment of every day.  All on our own. And therein lies our power.  The power we deny because we have forgotten who we are and still believe we must impress someone else. Other people’s opinions are valued way too highly and are based not upon who we are, but who the other person is; their life experience and values and fears.  How can anyone know us when they don’t even know themselves?  How can we know someone else when we don’t know ourselves?  Judgment is God’s job.  Being willing to surrender judgment to Him is ours.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

I’M READY, AREN’T YOU?

Beloved Child of God, you know you are ready to take some steps to help yourself to a happier experience. You are ready to be used as an instrument of God’s Holy Love and Peace and Joy in the world. You know you are tired of being afraid and are ready for something better. That’s why you are reading this. That’s why your heart is aching for something more. That’s why the stress and anxiety and depression of the world’s craziness weighs so heavily. Somewhere deep inside you, you know that you don’t have to carry the weight of trying to be something you’re not. Or live in a world where insanity appears to reign.

God’s Love is fluid and flexible and never set in stone. It follows us wherever we go and no matter what we’re doing. And yet His Love is constant and eternal and unchanging as well. Although God does not cause sickness and war and scarcity and chaos, His presence is in every aspect of the world’s insanity. This means that everything in a world filled with fear can be turned around by simply turning to Him for help at all times and in all things. God cannot stop His children from doing strange things, but He is there to guide us when we are ready to choose a better way.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

LET’S HEAL OUR RELATIONSHIPS

“It is through our relationships we will be healed.”

Let us rest our mind lightly upon someone who consistently disturbs our peace. Then envision a light around them and see them, not as they appear in the world, but as they must be as a creation of a Loving God.  Let’s let go of all of our attachment to what they say and how they say it; to what they do and how they do it and simply let our heart open in gentle and forgiving kindness and hand them to God for healing.

There are only extensions of love or calls for love.  Anyone who is unhappy and manifests unhappiness in the world is doing so because they don’t know they are entitled to miracles.  And if they did know, they would probably be afraid of what that means. Some are comfortable in the dark place in their minds. They may have lived in fear all their lives and it’s possible they have grown accustomed to that way of thinking. Unless we want to continue to join in the games of anger and resentment and judgment and revenge, of hurt and victimhood, we must be the one to change our mind. We must be the one who chooses to align with the power of Love and see a better way for ourselves and for all others in our lives. In the quietness of our mind we can believe for those choosing pain and fear, that they deserve better than what they are allowing in their lives.

We can do this through prayer and through meditation. We can rise to a higher level and silently offer everyone in our life, the love for which they are calling.  No matter how miserable someone may appear, in their heart they desperately want to be told by a Loving Presence that they are wrong.  Wrong to think they are victims of an insane world.  Wrong to think they must attack before they are attacked.  Wrong to think they must protect themselves from their “enemies”.  And if we are the one living in fear, defensive and projecting anger, then we must take own hand, open our own heart and let the light of God’s love shine away all that disturbs us.  This can all be done without a word being spoken aloud, for ourselves and for everyone. If we are in a physically abusive relationship, we must always get ourselves into a safe place. From a place of safety, we can effectively do the work of allowing healing in.

It doesn’t matter if we see no difference in how someone behaves toward us for our efforts; it’s all about how we choose to react to that person.  We can simmer or fight back or we can quietly and kindly leave the dance floor and they may never know it.  But we will know it by the peace in our heart, by the love and joy we now manifest in our life.  By the empowerment we experience by choosing Love instead of hate.  By choosing God instead of fear.

It’s never too late to turn a disturbed relationship into a Holy relationship simply because it does not need a physical action or words spoken aloud to make this happen. It all happens in the mind and in the heart and in the decision to forgive and choose again.  Even if someone has left this world long ago, we can still choose to follow a new path of forgiveness and heal our relationship with them in our own heart. We don’t do this for the other person, we do this for ourselves. We do this so that the poison of a sick relationship no longer makes us sick.

We can’t make the changes with the thought of changing someone else’s behavior.  Each child of God has their own free will to choose their own experience and thankfully, that is none of our business.  Our business is to choose to allow healing in our own life, our own mind, our own spirit and our own heart.

If we falter and find ourselves succumbing to the temptation to play the game or dance the dance again, it’s not important. We can simply ask for help and choose again … and again … and again.  Every moment is an opportunity to be peace-filled and joyous. Every moment is an opportunity to choose God instead of fear. Every moment is an opportunity to choose to heal a relationship. It is through our healed relationships that we are now open to the abundance, peace, joy, health and well being and safety and protection of a loving God.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

I CHANGE MY MIND

A Course in Miracles teaches that we cannot change the world, but in order to be at peace and to experience the abundance and joy of God in our lives, WE MUST CHANGE OUR MIND ABOUT HOW WE SEE THE WORLD.  We can’t keep thinking and talking about how terrible the world is without seeing and experiencing that.  If we look for darkness and pain, then as powerful creations of God, we must give ourselves what we look for. We can’t be consistently happy without choosing it. If we truly want to experience miracles (and anything that comes from love is a miracle), then we must look for miracles.  We must choose Love in all things.  We must STOP judging ourselves and others. It’s the only way to heal our spirits, experience a wonderful life and make the world a better place.

Most of us cannot do that without some help.  And so God has sent helpers.  Everywhere are seen and unseen helpers in and throughout the world.  You know who and what that is for you.  Turn to your helpers and ask to see the world through God’s Loving eyes.

You have experienced plenty of fear and suffering in your life.  Aren’t you getting tired of that?  Aren’t you weary of seeing your life reflected in a painful past?  An uncertain future? What could it possibly hurt to try another way?

Our forgiving and loving thoughts are the truth of God within us. The truth is that we were created in the image of God and God is only Love.  This means that in our essence, our spirit, deep within us where we don’t always look, we are only Love.  Instead of frantically seeking love in all the wrong places, let’s surrender the seeking and BE LOVE.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

THE PAINTING (A Parable)

Mary, a retired school teacher, lost her parents when she was very young and her husband had left her early on with a young child to raise alone. These events left her bitter and unhappy. Her only consolations in life were her daughter, her granddaughter and her friend from childhood, Anne, who had always been there for her. She also enjoyed antiques and she and Anne would often go to yard sales and flea markets looking for treasures. Her favorite places were little musty, dusty out of the way antique shops run by ancient, musty, dusty proprietors as old as their merchandise.

One day Mary wandered by herself into a little shop she had never seen before. The first thing that caught her eye was a beautiful frame. It was ornate and embossed with a brilliant gold that lit up the dark little shop. She had to have it, but she was afraid to look at the cost. When she did her heart soared. It was well within her price range. She took it home immediately. Now, she had to find the perfect painting. She searched for weeks and months for the perfect picture, but she simply couldn’t find a painting that suited the glorious frame.

Mary was startled awake one night by a bright light in her room. A radiant being stood at the foot of her bed. The being spoke in a kind and gentle voice. ”You must paint the picture yourself. I will help you.” “But I can’t paint.” Mary sputtered. And the angel patiently repeated, “You must paint the picture yourself. I will help you.”

The next morning, Mary awoke feeling a mild excitement inside her. Was it a dream? Or had an angel visited her? Angel visitations are not something that happened to people like her so she decided it was just a dream. Nonetheless she went to the art store and purchased some acrylic paints, some brushes and a blank white canvas just the size of her beautiful frame as well as a small easel and other paraphernalia the art store clerk had told her she would need.

“Wouldn’t it be wonderful”, she thought, “If I have a hidden talent for painting that I never knew existed?” Then without telling anyone for fear of being ridiculed, she set up the easel in her small study and put on an old shirt of her husband’s that still hung in her closet. “Now what?” she thought and then somehow she knew. She opened the paint tubes and began mixing colors and dabbing her brush into the paints. But she was terrified to touch the brush to the canvas for fear she would make a fool of herself by trying to accomplish something far beyond her capabilities.

Then it happened. The Angel appeared again right beside her. “Don’t worry”, the gentle voice whispered, “I will guide your hand.” With trembling fingers she allowed the Angel to take her hand and lift the brush to the canvas. But she was too afraid to look, so she closed her eyes and simply allowed the Angel to do the work. This continued for days and weeks. After each session with the Angel, she refused to look at what had been accomplished that day.

Finally one day the Angel whispered softly, “It is finished.” With great trepidation, Mary opened her eyes and looked. Her heart sank. All she saw was a blank canvas. It looked the same as the day she had brought it home. “It’s … it’s nothing. All these weeks and nothing has been painted.” But the Angel seemed not to hear her. “Now, put it in the frame and hang it in a prominent place.” “What?” she cried. “Everyone will laugh at me.” And the Angel repeated her command more forcefully, “Now, put it in the frame and hang it in a prominent place. And remember what I tell you, the frame is a symbol for the body and the earthly experience and the painting is the spirit and God’s Holy Creation.”

Confused by these odd words, she felt compelled to follow the Angel’s instructions. She put the blank canvas in the gorgeous frame and hung it over her mantle. But every time she looked at it, she felt a little sick and very foolish. A few days later, her seven year old granddaughter came bounding into the living room. As soon as her eyes lit upon the picture over the mantle, she stopped. “Oh, Grandma!” she cried, “Thank you!”

“Thank you for what?” Mary asked perplexed.

“Thank you for the beautiful painting of me. My eyes are laughing and there is light all around my face!”

Mary turned to her daughter and asked, “What do you see on that canvas?” er daughter, going through a difficult divorce and quite distracted by her own pain looked and said, “Nothing. It’s just a blank canvas. But that frame is very nice.” This confused Mary even more.

One day Mary was under the weather with a bout of flu when her friend, Anne, came over with chicken soup and a hug. As Anne turned toward the painting, her face lit up with a wide smile and she turned to Mary and said, awestruck, “Mary, I didn’t know you could paint! That is a beautiful portrait of my face. And the light in my eyes is like it came from a heavenly place. How did you do it?”

Mary looked again at the blank canvas. She was ashamed to tell Anne that she could see nothing. Clearly there were those who were given a special sight that was withheld from her. The injustice of this made her more bitter than before, but she just smiled weakly at Anne and thanked her for the chicken soup.

Visitors came and went and some saw beautiful portraits of themselves and others saw nothing but the canvas, although they did admire the gorgeous antique frame. This confirmed Mary’s suspicions that God was withholding gifts from her. She could no longer even appreciate the beauty of the antique frame.

Then one day she received a call that her dear friend, Anne, was being hospitalized after a mild stroke. She rushed to the hospital, forgetting all about the painting and her own misery for once. When it was time for Anne to be released from the hospital she was told that Anne needed a caretaker for a while. Her son and daughter-in-law worked full time and so they asked if Mary could help out?

“Of course”, said Mary, “I will put her in my room. I can sleep on the couch.” As Mary cared for Anne for the next few weeks she could think of nothing, but how much she loved her friend and how devastated she would be if she lost her. She fed her and bathed her and helped her with exercises after the physical therapist taught her how to do them. And though Mary gladly slept on the couch each night, she refused to look at the painting. She thought of taking it down, but something told her to leave it where it was.

Then the day came that Anne was able to leave the bedroom with a walker. Mary guided her carefully to the couch and made her comfortable and then went into the kitchen to prepare some tea. When she came back with the tea and settled herself beside Anne, Anne turned to her and said, “When did you find the time to do it?”

“Do what?” Mary asked.

“Paint another picture. I love this one of you and me smiling into each other’s eyes. And that heavenly light that seems to flow from us and yet is still one with us somehow … It’s amazing!”

Mary looked at the canvas and her heart beat hard. She could see it! Anne and her, their eyes lovingly focused upon each other, their smiles so kind and filled with trust. “Oh, Anne,” she breathed, “It’s beautiful. The light is radiant!” And then for the first time, she told the story of the Angel and the painting and how she felt she had been rejected by God, Himself, as others could see what she could not.

“But Mary Dear, how could you ever think that?” asked Anne, taking Mary’s hand in hers. “You’re the one who inspired the Angel to paint this lovely picture.”

As Mary’s vision cleared and her closed heart opened wide, she knew that Anne was right. All this time she had been as blessed as anyone and it was only her decision to be unhappy that had blinded her from seeing it. And then she recalled the strange comment the Angel had made when she told Mary to hang the painting. It now made perfect sense. With her heart filled with love Mary spent the remainder of her life painting heavenly portraits and teaching others to see their bodies and their lives as a frame around a lovely work of art. The End

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

GOD IS

A wise and thoughtful person recently asked me, “What does it mean to say God is Love in a metaphysical sense?” As I always do, I asked for guidance in answering. Interestingly enough, each answer I received seemed to circumvent the question, rather than answer it directly. I wanted to be more specific and helpful, but try as I might no specific answers came to me. Perhaps that is because God is beyond specifics, beyond analytical thinking and even beyond metaphysics in the way we perceive it.  Then this thought came to my mind; A Course In Miracles teaches that the greatest prayer is this: God Is.  And then we stop.

I’m not certain that we, with our limited perspective can analyze what God is in a metaphysical or any other sense only because when we are asking questions, we are not, at that moment, experiencing God. I have spent most of my life questioning God and His Universe. Why? When? How? What? Who? After all this time, it seems I am the most peaceful when I simply allow my mind to become still and forget about asking questions altogether.  Maybe the answer is to simply know He is and that’s enough. As I was contemplating all this a thought popped into my head.  “God is an Experience that cannot be questioned or answered in the world.” I heard this very lovingly and clearly.  When I hear this way I know that I must simply express gratitude and let it go.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

THE SPECIAL ONE (A Parable)

Ever since he began having the dream, he recognized that he was special.  In the dream there were people all around, but he always loomed larger than anyone and above him there hung a giant number One.  The One shimmered, lit by an unearthly glow and was suspended above his head like a halo.  He saw it as a Divine message.  In his waking moments he concluded that it meant he was destined for great things. So he worked harder than anyone else at his job.  He went to church on Sundays and other days as well.  He smiled his special smile upon everyone he met, but he never laughed out loud for he took his calling very seriously.

He bent down and offered the homeless woman his special touch as she sat outside the coffee shop he frequented in the mornings.  One morning he bought her breakfast and beamed his smile at her. That night his dream was more clear than ever.  He was surrounded by people from everywhere and above his head the One was even larger and shined more brightly than before.

“That’s it!” He thought.  “I am suppose to do good works.”  So when he wasn’t working overtime at work, he visited hospitals and spoke to the sick and told stories to the children. He smiled at the hospital staff knowing he was serving just as they were, only a little better. After all, he was number One.  In his dream the One never faltered.  It glowed above his head as always.  He liked feeling special and unique and number One.  He sometimes wondered if he was the incarnation of some ancient holy person.  He enjoyed the feeling of people asking him for help and him shining his special smiling light upon them.  Every time he helped someone the number One in his dream shone larger and brighter and the people needing him crowded closer.

He found in time that he felt more fully satisfied, more gratified when he was serving others than when he was working at his job.  And so one day he quit his job, smiling kindly at his fellow employees and his boss.  Knowing they were losing him must have been deeply saddening for them.  He was surprised when he heard laughter and rejoicing when he walked out the door.  He concluded that even in his leaving, he left behind the joyous blessings of his kind and generous spirit and he smiled his special, knowing smile. But again, he didn’t laugh aloud for he recognized that his holy specialness required a certain decorum and gravity.

He traveled the world over and walked among the people shelling out smiles and blessings everywhere he went.  In India he saw himself as the incarnated Gandhi combined with the Holiness of Mother Theresa.  In Tibet he was the spirit of the Dalai Lama. Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer in America were just below him in the spiritual ranks. In South Africa he fancied himself greater than Nelson Mandela or Desmond Tutu.  Wherever he went he knew he was the greatest of them all. He was number One.

Years went by and he grew older and the number One in his dreams became a bit tarnished and old along with him, but it was there right above his head.  And he still believed in it and in himself as number One. Then one day he had a dream in which he saw himself as old and tired and he knew that his work here was done. It was time for him to walk through the Holy gates of Heaven and be greeted and honored as the number One.  But before he died he had one last dream; this one more vivid and more clear than any of the others.  More like a vision.

There he was looming large with people all around. The number One shone brightly, more brightly than ever before. He saw himself in the dream smiling wisely. He had done well in his life and here was proof. But this time instead of looking only at himself, he looked around him.  With surprise, he found himself surrounded by everyone he had ever helped and everyone he had ever encountered in his life. Each person he had ever touched in any way was there.  They were all joyous and noisy with laughter. With benevolent solemnity, he nodded to each one, knowing he was being honored and applauded for all his good works.

Then something strange began to happen.  As he watched, each person came closer to him and then closer and one by one their spirit presence  faded into his.  Each man, each woman, each child were not just themselves alone, but part of him.  And somehow he was part of them.  And as each one joined their spirit with his, the number One became fuller and more radiant. Its brilliant rays filled his vision with a light more powerful than any he had ever seen.  Finally there was no one apart from him but only him joined with everyone.  What did this mean? He wondered.  Why was he having such a dream at the end of his life?  His specialness had disappeared before his very eyes.  And then just as he was breathing his last few breaths he understood, not only this dream, but all the others.  And with this understanding came a loving voice inside his mind that said, “You and All are One.”

And with his final breath, he did the only thing he could.  He left the world laughing.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

THE MIRROR (A Parable)

As you go about your busy day, you sense a presence alongside you. It is calm and quiet and yet you feel uneasy.  Somehow you know this presence wants something from you. You’re not sure what and so you turn away. You do things to distract you from this unseen something that you believe will somehow change your life if you allow it. You may cook and clean obsessively. Or exercise, or work and play too hard. Perhaps you sleep too much or you eat more than you need or lose yourself in reality TV.  When the presence whispers in your ear, you may feel the need to talk incessantly or fill your mind with mindless chatter about absolutely nothing.

But even as you try your best to hide from it, you’re just a little curious. And so one day, you take a quick and cautious look before you turn away.  What was that you saw?  A mirror?  The presence held a mirror. You’re certain of it and you turn your head to look again. Your heart pounds, your mouth gets dry.  It is a mirror! You knew this day would come and here it is – the mirror reflecting all your nightmares!  The mirror of judgment.  The mirror of all your past mistakes.  The mirror of guilty secrets you have kept, not only from the world, but from yourself as well.  And it’s so close!  How did it come so near without you’re knowing it was here?

Panicked now, you turn and run.  You are not ready to face the mirror and its righteous judgments waiting to condemn you. Yes, your life is marred by sickness, sadness, fear and guilt and the world is clouded by violence and pain. It’s true that even in the good times you are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Still you prefer to live this way, than face the music and the mirror. And so you keep on running. Running for your life.

Finally, one day you realize you’re tired.  So tired that you can’t take another step.  You can’t be any busier.  You have nothing more to say and the chatter in your mind is boring you to death. The fear and suffering in your heart and in the world is just too painful to bear an instant longer. You have reached your limit; hit bottom, maxed out. You raise your palms in complete surrender. You know it’s over, but you just don’t have the energy to care. You feel the presence as it stands quietly before you and slowly, slowly you raise your eyes.  There it is. The mirror.  You know you have to look and as you do, you fall down on your knees.  Great wells of emotion sweep over you and tears pour down your face.

From the mirror, a wondrous being looks back at you. It’s beautiful and filled with light, with purity and innocence. Like nothing you have ever seen.  You look into its eyes. Gentle, kind and lovely are its eyes.  Its smile is so filled with love that you can barely breathe. There is no judgment in its heart, not one speck of condemnation.  “Who … who are you?” you whisper. The mirror dissolves before your eyes and as it does the presence lifts you to your feet and answers in a voice that barely makes a sound, yet still resounds as clear as crystal in your mind, “Why, I am YOU, of course.”

In disbelief at first, you watch the sadness, fear and guilt fade into the light of your true Being and at last you understand. The you, you thought you were was only a distorted image in a fun house mirror. All this time the one you ran and hid from was yourself.  It was you condemning you and no one else.  The real You, God’s innocent creation, eternal and unchanging, filled with love, defined by joy, a light and wondrous being, was gently, calmly waiting to be heard.

And with this understanding comes the quiet thought. “Now, go and tell the others.” And gratefully you do.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

A MOTHER’S MIRACLE

A mother hadn’t seen her daughter in more than twenty-five years, except for a few short moments in time. Over the years, the daughter knew where the mother was, but the mother didn’t know where the daughter was. The daughter didn’t stay still. The mother searched every way she knew over those years and thought of her daughter every day. What caused the estrangement? Who knows? Who cares? All that matters is the mother’s heart was filled with longing, love and forgiveness. She wanted her daughter back in her life where she belonged.

Then one day she found a place on the world wide web. With her daughter’s name, date of birth, social security number and fifty dollars, suddenly there she was. Her child, now a woman of thirty-eight, lived in Minneapolis. Not that far from Milwaukee. Not that far at all.

The mother wrote a loving letter to her daughter not knowing if she would respond. She sent her daughter her phone number and e-mail address and one day she opened her e-mail and her heart leapt with gladness. There was her daughter’s name with a message. With trepidation the mother opened the message and the mother wept tears of joy at the loving response. “I’m happy now.” The daughter told her mother. “I would love to see you.” And the mother cried for that was all she wanted.

This mother and daughter’s experience is felt by us all in some form. It needn’t be so dramatic, nor does it need to encompass 25 years of time. Every time we don’t feel loving toward someone, every time we let our anger lead us and whenever we hold judgments against our loved ones, we are estranged for that moment, that day. Every time we forget to forgive and we feel the need to be right instead of loving, we are estranged.

Estrangement is fear and anger from something in the past that wasn’t forgiven. It builds a wall one brick slapped with mortar upon another until the wall is higher than the two who built it. And time is sometimes a great divider instead of the healer it is meant to be because it can magnify and distort the past. The only way to lower the wall is to let it go. Forgive the past. The past years or the past moment. In God’s timelessness there is no difference. Then one day the desire to heal the past and scale the wall becomes greater than the fear that built it and the bricks begin to crumble into red dust and a powerful wind fueled by love blows the dust away. And all that’s left are two beings reaching out in love. Reaching and remembering what matters. Love matters. Forgiveness heals. And therein lay the miracles which are the ingredients for a Holy relationship.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

AND THEN ONE DAY IT HAPPENED (A Parable)

A spirit being of no age and no ethnicity, wandered lightly from the earth and back again. Not walls or doors could keep her out, but only hearts with locks. Her flesh was not yet flesh, but something else, translucent, yet substantial in its way. A filmy gown of blended greens began as almost white and spiraled from her bodice to her hem. The color light or lighter than a candied mint, sea lettuce, then new leaf, until it settled at the hem into the darkest green of aged moss.

And from her spirit, music lifted flowing into joy of unheard symphonies while colors flowed like ribbons in rhythm to the soaring notes. The hues were true and vivid, undimmed by fear in thought or act. So glist’ning garnet, deepest plum and turquoise were a few, then buttered daffodil and indigo all arced in spirals, spun in circles, disappeared in wisps and then came back again.

Exquisite voices, rich with resonance not heard in denser worlds all rose as one with notes and hues and her. A lovely fragrance filled her senses, wafted through the streaming colors resting on the music’s bars. Akin to young and dewy rose touched by a sprig of lilac blending with the scent of pure gardenia making something never smelled before. At times it lifted her and others was so delicate as barely there at all.

Then spirit beings like herself appeared through colored mists in flowing gowns and filmy robes of purple, white and azure, indigo and red. Some had wings and flew with grace and then their wings dissolved allowing them to dance on feet of light. Most beautiful were they and filled with strength and health not known in any other world. Hands joined with hers while eyes and voices raised in gratitude to their Creator and their Source. As one they knew the promise and the blessing of eternity. And there was nothing else and here was home.

She dropped to her knees, opening her heart to its fullest and in this state of purest Love she shared the truth with all on earth. She spoke with those who did not know and those who wondered, but were afraid to understand. She told them that this eternal state of Heaven, peace and love and joy lived right inside their hearts. Safety and protection were theirs there as well as health and well being and unlimited abundance. In this purest state of mind, all giving and receiving were the same. And what did they need to have all this and more? Just a tiny willingness, a small crack in the armor, a feeble call for help – to see a better way.

And then when they forgot, she, gently and with kindness reminded them again and then again. Until one day it happened. All the world awoke and recognized its Oneness and fear was gone forever and God was all they knew.

There was a celebration. Light poured across the land and colors flowed like ribbons while music lifted into soaring notes of grace and wonder and every voice was now exquisite. A lovely fragrance wafted all around and blended with the crystal sound of laughter and tears were never shed again, except perhaps in joy.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.
