SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE

“My purpose is peace.”

If someone pushes our buttons. Instead of letting the angry or hurt feelings get the best of us, we can look at the feelings being engendered by this interchange and say, “I’m not feeling at peace about this.  Clearly this is something I need to learn from.”  In this way instead of being a victim of someone else, we are empowering ourselves by choosing to use the experience for something positive.

Now, we can go into our breathing relaxation place and be thankful for the understanding that we have a purpose that lies beyond the petty nonsense of the world.  Our purpose is peace.  Our purpose is forgiveness. Our purpose is to know that we and all God’s children are here to allow ourselves to be healed. And in so doing we are instrumental in the world’s healing as well. This is the bigger picture.

ONE SIZE FITS ALL

“Let every voice but God’s be still in me.” A Course In Miracles.

We have voices coming to us from all directions and it can be confusing as to what matters and what doesn’t.  What is helpful and what should be left behind. Who knows what they’re talking about and who is speaking from their own pain and confusion. What inner voice to listen to and what inner voice to forgive and surrender. The simplicity of the answer is freeing and amazingly right for everyone. When it comes to this prayer, one size fits all.  “Let every voice but God’s be still in me.”  Amen.

BREATHING ROOM

“I am breathing in; I am breathing out.”

The great Vietnamese Spiritual Teacher, Thich Nhat Hanh, teaches a simple exercise called Mindful Breathing, which is a form of meditation that is simple, yet powerful.  He says to simply identify the in-breath as in-breath and the out-breath as out-breath.  When we breathe in watch our breath and acknowledge it as our in-breath. This is me breathing in.  And when we breathe out acknowledge that as our out breath. This is me breathing out.

Let all thoughts go.  Only quietly breathe. This is me breathing in. This is me breathing out. The beauty of this simple meditation is that we can do it sitting, lying down, walking, driving, doing dishes, shoveling snow, walking on the treadmill, at work, at home, at play.  In this way our entire life is a mindful meditation.  Instead of being fearful about the past, or anxious about the future, we are living entirely in the moment.

In this way we are allowing healing to enter our mind and be our gift from God in each and every moment of the day.

PEACE OR FEAR?

“The peace of God lives in me now.”

Peace and Fear cannot live together side by side. When we are at peace we have forgotten fear.  When are in fear, peace disappears. Today and every moment of each day we must choose our companion.

IS IT POSSIBLE … ?

“I am willing to see myself differently.”

There are two ways to see ourselves. There is our perception of us and there is the truth of us.  No one’s perception is the same as their reality. Perception is of the world; Reality is of God. For some people perception and Reality are so far apart that it’s difficult to align them. When we don’t value ourselves, we draw to ourselves experiences that will affirm our feelings of victimhood and self denial.

Consciously or unconsciously we have taught ourselves to believe we don’t deserve the good things in life. Or we are afraid to fail and if we do fail at something, (and everybody does) we think that the failure defines us instead of just being a part of life that everyone experiences. What we see as failure is really an opportunity to learn and to grow stronger.

Humility can be a good attribute, but if it is experienced to the extreme it becomes a form of self abasement. All we need to do for now is be willing to open our mind a crack and ask this question, Is it possible I am stronger and smarter, more capable and more deserving than I think?  Let’s repeat this affirmation.  “I am willing to see myself differently.”  Every change if it is to be effective and permanent must begin in our mind.

IT’S ALL IN THE SEEING

“I am ready to see this differently.”

We all have the power to be happy, confident and successful. What stops us isn’t what we do in the world as much as what we think.  In order to change our experience we have to start by changing our thoughts.  We all can change our minds about the world and ourselves and the people in our lives.  It’s about seeing differently and that requires one thing, willingness.  The first step is to simply open our minds just a fraction and say to ourselves, “I am willing to see this differently.”

Whenever anyone or anything bothers us in any way, we can empower ourselves with these words, “I want to see this differently.” We needn’t worry if we don’t see anything differently right away.  It’s not about that.  It’s about being willing to see differently with the key word being WILLING.  Those words and that simple thought will open our mind to another way of thinking.  Let’s not worry about what we should be thinking. That will fall into place naturally once we have begun to realize that the power for a new and better life is already ours.  We just need to be willing to open our mind to the fact that there is another way of seeing in the world.  Most of us stay stuck because we don’t understand that we have choices. We all have choices.

So let’s take the first step together, “I want to see this differently.”  Now we have stepped back and allowed God to lead the way.

SEPARATE THE FEAR

“I want the peace of God instead of fear.”

Peace is the antidote to anxiety and fear.  But how do we manifest that when fear is strong and seems to be validated by everything going on in our lives and in the world around us?

First separate the fear from what is happening in the world. When our fears are focused on something specific it is hard not to believe in them.  Let’s take the specific out and just focus on the feelings. See how they move within us. Feel the tightening between our shoulders and the heaviness in our chest.  Our heart is pounding, our mouth dry, our breathing becomes shallow.  Watch the dark thoughts as they come and go. Try to say this, “I don’t care how it looks or how it feels, it isn’t real.”  This thought will help us get a new perspective. This thought will help us be the observer of our feelings instead of the feelings themselves.

Now, we can focus on the light and watch it shine away every dark corner of our mind.

MORE MIRACLE TALK …

“I want the peace of God instead of this.” A Course In Miracles

A little more discussion about miracles today.  A Course In Miracles teaches that anything that comes from love is a miracle.  Forgiveness comes from love.  Kindness comes from love.  Patience, empathy and joy come from love. Simply suspending judgment and surrendering everything that blocks our peace is done in love.  So if we can’t forgive or be kind and patient or empathetic or joyous in a given moment, we can at least suspend judgment and surrender.  We can at least decide that we don’t like this feeling, show me something else.

We make choices constantly as we go about our day. We choose when buying shoes or testing mangos or meals on a menu. Why not choose to live a better life?  Let’s shop for happier thoughts. It’s the same principle. And it’s all about our willingness, and it begins with a simple decision; “I want the peace of God instead of this.”

Unlike choosing a pair of shoes or testing a mango, the results of choosing peace may not be apparent instantly.  That’s when we need to remember we have chosen fear as our guide for a very long time.  And that energy may reverberate for a while.  But that’s no excuse to give up and that is no reason to believe in it.  Simply look at it, smile at ego’s nonsense and try again.

Each moment is an opportunity to smile and choose peace.  “I want the peace of God instead of this.”  As with any exercise it gets easier over time.

EXTENDING LOVE

A Course In Miracles teaches that it is through our relationships we will be healed.  The importance of this is undeniable. For when we have allowed healing in our relationships we have done everything to also allow our own healing. Once we begin to see the truth; that there are only those who are crying out for love or those who are extending or allowing love to flow through us, a treasure trove of miracles will open for us. This fact may be clear to us in some relationships and circumstances, but now we need to understand that there are no exceptions.  This is how it is with everyone in our lives, those passing through and those long term.

To call or cry out for love means that deep within us, we believe that God’s Love is being denied us and we react to this with fear, sadness, anger and even violence. It’s not surprising since it is certainly a terrifying thought to be alone and without love. To extend Love means that we understand that God’s Love cannot be missing for it is always and forever within us just quietly awaiting our acceptance.  God is Love and God is all there is.  We cannot be unhappy, angry, sad or fearful in any form when we truly understand this. And so now we can offer (or extend) kindness, compassion, empathy and forgiveness to our brothers and sisters.

A NEW BEGINNING

Let’s begin our practice today with these words, “God is the Love with which I experience this moment, this day, this season, this lifetime.”

Let this season be a time of new beginnings. Let’s know we deserve to be happy. Let’s believe we are entitled to miracles.  Say this with determination, “I am entitled to miracles.  God, let me feel your presence in all ways and at all times.”

And now let’s have a lovely new beginning and the start of a whole new way of life.

HEALING OUR THOUGHTS

The next few days we will focus on habits and resolutions for the new year.  Let’s begin with I resolve to love myself today. I resolve to see, not my problems, but my perfection.  I resolve to not rest in my dark thoughts, but to bring them to the light, smile at them and let them go.

What truly needs to be healed is what we think and how we value ourselves.  When we finally understand this and choose to live our lives this way we will begin to find balance with what is out of synch within us and our “bad” habits one by one will fade away.  And as they do we will recognize that what we thought was bad was really just an opportunity to forgive and heal.

THE TRUTH IS TRUE

What is Truth? True Truth? Perhaps it is beyond what we can experience here in this world. Maybe we can get a glimmer if we envision it as light. In this light there is a dawning; the beginning of an understanding that there is Something else. Something that we knew once and have forgotten. And though we have forgotten it, still this Truth remains constant and eternal and ours. Our goal. Or beyond goals.  A state of being perhaps. A state of oneness. Oneness with God and with each other.

Is it like light?
In the world light changes, but in Truth it remains always and forever the same.
Is it like Love?
In the world love changes, but in Truth it remains always and forever the same.

In our separated state we miss it. Because we know something is missing we get depressed and sad and anxious. Because we feel an emptiness from lack, we feel afraid. Right now we only know Truth as something that is missing.

If we were there, we would see Truth can only be shared and yet it must go beyond this. Sharing implies that something can be withheld. The Truth cannot be withheld because it is imbedded in us. It is us. It comes from God. It is God.

I think it’s impossible to find the words because Truth goes beyond words. It goes beyond all thought. It simply is and then we stop because there is no more.  Once we have experienced Truth, we will be done. When we have reached this pinnacle, we will be Home. Home where we belong. Home in Truth.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

SMALL AND ORDINARY MIRACLES

“I am entitled to miracles.” ACIM

We are all entitled to miracles.  But what are miracles? Instantaneous and unexplainable healings of the body? Surviving a car crash unscathed? Falling from a four story building without a scratch?  Perhaps. I have learned from my years of spiritual Course studies that anything that comes from love is a miracle.  So simple.  So ordinary. So every day.

A phone call from a grandchild. A neighbor offering a hand. A volunteer reading to an elderly person. A lullaby sung to a small child. Running errands for a sick friend. A ride in the rain. Sunscreen at the beach.

There are miracles in smiles. A mother’s smile. A father’s smile. A wife’s smile. A husband’s smile. A friend’s smile. Any smile from any loved one. A smile to a stranger or from a stranger. Not seeing a stranger as a stranger. A hug for someone grieving. A wounded spirit calling out for help. An unexplainable feeling of joy and well being out of nowhere.

Ordinary things: Breakfast on the table. Flowers on the breakfast table. A drinkable glass of water from the tap. Clean dishes. Hummingbirds at the feeder.  A cat on a lap.  A happy dog begging for a walk. A bad day turned around by a sympathetic listening ear. Knowing the sun will always shine again.

You get the idea.  So let’s walk the world to day watching for those small and ordinary miracles as well as those dramatic and amazing ones that make up this journey we call life. They’re everywhere. Some are noisily joyous and some so infinitesimal and quiet we don’t even recognize them as miracles. Some even look like tragedies. In every war and in every earthly devastation, even in sickness and in death, lovely little miracles are blooming. The lesson is not in the devastation, the lesson is in the love that brings connection and oneness and miracles. Love will bloom, light will shine and healing will happen wherever God’s children walk because they walk with Him. And because of Him we are all entitled to miracles. Remember, everything that comes from love is a miracle.

Oh and one more thing; you are a miracle because you come from Love.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

TUNNELS AND TRUTH, A PARABLE

“I am not the victim of the world I see.”  ACIM

We are walking through a tunnel, narrow and dark and all we see.  We reach out and touch the sides of the tunnel. It feels cold and damp and solid. It smells dank and musty. We can’t see through it or around it, above it or below it. It seems impossible that this tunnel isn’t real.  And yet something in our heart says it isn’t as solid as it seems.  We want to believe that.  The instant we say, “I want to believe that this tunnel is just in my mind,” a faint light appears way down at the end. It’s just a glimmer and a faltering one at that. As we peer intently toward it, we decide the light must be our imagination. How can it magically appear just because we had a thought that the tunnel might not be real?  The world doesn’t work that way.  If something is, it is and just thinking differently about it can’t change it.  Can it?

We keep walking, our heart pounding because it’s scary not being able to see through the darkness on all sides of us. Steadfastly, we walk toward that distant light just in case it’s something. Anyway, it’s  pointless to stand still. As we keep focused on the light, it appears to get brighter. Is it our imagination or is the tunnel becoming less dense, less solid? Our hearts begin to lift and hope rises within us.  What if … ?  What if this tunnel is not our reality, but only a symbol of our past thinking; past thinking that we have outgrown? Where are these thoughts coming from?

As we continue on, our steps becoming quicker and stronger. Our heads lift, our shoulders go back as hope gets stronger. We begin to feel a presence beside us. “Who is here?” we ask. We’re afraid to look. And then we hear a whisper of sound in our ear. At first we don’t understand and then as we strain to hear, it becomes more clear.  “You are safe.”  Startled we turn our heads to look at what or who is speaking to us.  We can’t believe our eyes.  It’s an angel!  There is an angel walking right next to us.  We can see the outline of its flowing gown and hear the rustle of its wings. It takes our hand and instantly the tunnel disappears and we are enfolded in the most beautiful, loving, white light. The light shines around and through us as though we are not solid. A feeling of peace fills us and lifts us up. We are walking on air now, the angel still beside us. We remember that “walking on air” is an expression that means “feeling good”.  We smile at the symbolism.

We are in a meadow with flowers of every shade and type. In the distance, and all around us, we see tall trees ablaze with soft pink blossoms. Even from here we can smell their sweetness. There is a stream bubbling beside us. The angel invites us to take a sip of the cold, fresh water and we do.  As we drink, our thoughts clear and the last vestige of fear disappears like wisps of fog evaporating into nothing. We know this is in our mind just as the dark, dank tunnel was and yet we like this new world our happier thoughts have made.

A deep and all encompassing sense of understanding fills us with a new sense of certainty. The peace of truth, safety and well being rises within us and lifts us to new heights. We grow into hundreds and then thousands and yet somehow we are One. More angels join our friend until they surround us. There is music and dance. It is a celebration.

We know our days of tunnel vision are over.  We are no longer a victim of the world as we knew it.  Now we are a gift to the Truth. And the Truth is a gift to us. Fear has disappeared forever and in its place lives Love, pure and powerful and crystal clear. It’s amazing to finally get it; tunnel vision is a choice and so is the Love that heals it.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

NO SACRIFICE REQUIRED

“Above all else I want to see. Vision has no cost to anyone. It can only bless.” ACIM

We speak of pursuing our spiritual path and seeking peace. Or we spend our time searching for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. In truth there is nothing to pursue and nothing to seek. It’s about growing still and allowing ourselves to see that peace is already ours. And the pot of gold is not what we think it is.

If we open our inner eyes we will see clearly that our search is over. Peace is right here, right now. And there is a rainbow that lives in our hearts with its pot of gold intact. But the gold is not material. That gold is a state of never ending happiness.

In this physical world we can search forever for pots of gold and never find what we are looking for. It’s only in seeing the truth; that we already have everything we want, that we can smile with gratitude and great relief as every care is lovingly removed and we are left only with the joyous certainty that our true power, Love, is now governing our lives.

Our inner vision shows us the truth, that we have been healed; healed from the strange thinking that this ever changing world can give us anything but a few fleeting moments of pleasure always accompanied by a roller coaster of emotions. If we want anything constant and consistent we have to look, not outside ourselves, but within. We’ve heard this message again and again throughout our lives. God never stops speaking to His children. He never stops providing messengers to show us the way to Him. How many times do we have to hear the message before we will finally decide to believe and to trust, not in the changing world, but in the eternal truth of our own being.

It’s so simple. Every moment that we have a thought apart from Him or whenever we find the world distracting us or overwhelming us with its noisy demands, let’s say to ourselves, “God, I choose you.” and “Above all else I want to see.” These simple thoughts will quiet the anxiety and calm the stress we feel and in this calm and quiet state, we will finally see with our true vision; the vision that only blesses us and everyone else as well.

Now, let’s look with calm eyes upon a new world and rest quietly in the golden pot of truth. Isn’t it lovely here? And look we still have all our things. Only now they don’t seem to matter much except to teach us that in being truly peaceful, no sacrifice at all was required.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

LIFE BEGINS IN STILLNESS

S ilently we need to go within and rest our mind upon some new, yet old and timeless
T houghts. In this quiet place comes the understanding that the peace we seek lives just
I nside our heart. It gathers strength and offers its holy wisdom each time we choose to
L ook where we have refused to look before. Our wonder and amazement grows as we
L isten to what we were too frightened and confused to hear because of the world’s distractions.
N ow we see only Love and hear only God’s sweet and simple blessings as He reminds us that
E ternal Oneness, our inheritance from Him, transforms our thoughts of chaos to thoughts of
S erenity, fulfillment, love, peace, comfort, joy and healing. In this ancient place within our mind
S tillness is our only truth. We smile as the light of our true being radiates throughout the world.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

WE ARE ONE

When the world seems insane, it’s important for us to remain sane.  The disaster in Haiti reminds us that we are brothers and sisters in need of joining in love and prayers and in quiet listening for answers from God. Not just for the people in Haiti, but everywhere in the world where there is suffering and injustice. Let’s not join the world in its pain, but instead let’s lift everyone up to the miracles of God’s Love knowing that God does not cause disaster, but He and His Angels are there to comfort and heal.

We can ask for guidance.  How can I help?  And then follow His guidance and open our minds and hearts to allow Love to be the connecting force for healing.  Help us to know that we are not our suffering, but His creations and nothing that happens here can change the truth or diminish our purpose.  Our purpose, as always, is to be an instrument of peace, a bringer of joy and to believe for those who cannot; that there is a power beyond disaster. And that power is Love.  Our purpose is to hold in our mind the truth and the light of each of God’s children and remember for them and for ourselves that beyond this world lies the true reality of our existence.  And that reality is Love.

Dear God, may everyone who is suffering see only your Light, rest in your Love and remember in their darkest hours that they are your Holy Creations. May every situation be a time for us to join with each other in Love and be a reminder that we are One. May we use each experience as an opportunity to suspend our beliefs and surrender our fears so that we can stay calm and quiet and bring peace and healing to the hearts of all who need to feel Your presence and experience your miracles.

Please guide us in how to be helpful. Please show us your laws governing this world transforming fear into love, disaster into relief and suffering into peace. Amen.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.

LAND OF THE PHARAOHS

I just returned from an amazing 10 day journey to Egypt (4 days on a cruise ship stopping at various ports; Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Edfu.)  Egypt is a magical land filled with ancient history, pyramids, tombs, hieroglyphics on stone walls, giant obelisks rising to touch the sun.  But my favorite was the people who live there now, the ancestors of the ancients.  Almost 100 percent, the people were friendly and funny, delightful and high pressured salesmen.

If you’re an American woman, they will call you queen and tell your husband he has a beautiful wife.  They will want to marry your granddaughters and throw you on a donkey whether you want to be on a donkey or not, then take your picture and charge you for the privilege. In the street markets, they will put things in your hand you don’t want and give you a “good” price and won’t let you go until you are overwhelmed and a little crazy, either paying the price you’ve bargained them down to or until you’ve run away laughing with the insanity of it.  There is no point in taking offense because it’s not the American way. It’s their culture.

Most of these people are very poor.  They live in hovels and this is how they feed their families, educate their children, exist.  It’s hard to take offense when you stand back and view the bigger picture and see how hard they work to please you so they can feed their families and educate their children and exist. And the amazing fact is that even though they go a bit overboard on the praise, you can see it in their smiling faces and their laughing eyes that they really do like you even though they need you for their survival. There is such a light shining through these good-natured people that I felt love flowing through me at every encounter.  And I laughed and joked with them as they laughed and joked with me.  On two occasions when they saw confusion and uncertainty on my husband’s face with the price of something, they said, “Not happy?” and held the money out to return it to him. Once when I tried to give money for no merchandise or service, the young man refused to take it.

At least this was my experience. I have to confess here that my experience is not always the same as everyone’s. So if you’ve been to Egypt and didn’t feel what I felt, I’m not surprised. I’ve seen people extremely unhappy and feeling used and abused by the methods of the Egyptians’ salesmanship.  But then I have the same experience here in this country.  Where people won’t see others the way I do or having similar experiences won’t have the same perception of those experiences I have.  It’s that way for all of us.  What is one person’s pain could be another person’s joy. It’s all in the looking.

What was my favorite part of the trip?  Two things, the fresh pulpy, delicious, dessert-like tall glasses of cool mango juice and the calls to prayers.  Everywhere, all throughout the cities, as well as in the temples, the mosques, at the pyramids and the tombs, 5 times a day without fail there would begin traveling from one place or spot to another, the beautiful singing calls to prayers.  The sounds of the beautiful male voices rising above the cities and in the holy places, even in the airports, the banks, the markets, magnified by microphones chanting lovely incomprehensible sounds that were always answered.  Everywhere groups of Muslims would remove their shoes and bow down in answer to the calls.  In the streets with traffic whizzing by.  It didn’t matter. They would touch their heads to the ground, then rise up and lift their arms to the sky, then touch their heads again to the ground and repeat the action, saying something I couldn’t understand. I didn’t want to stare disrespectfully so I can’t be accurate or detailed about the ceremony. I only know what I felt, a kind of awe in the presence of something quietly holy that has been going on for centuries in open praise of God in a way I’ve never experienced here.

I was amazed to learn that some tourists were finding this prayer calling annoying and interfering. How do we ever justify finding anyone’s ancient spiritual traditions annoying?  Especially when we are the visitors?

We had some experiences that weren’t so fun, mostly in the traveling, but the overall experience is something I wouldn’t have wanted to miss.  The history and the pyramids, you can see on travelogues and read about online or in books, but the experience and the awe inspiring sight of these monuments in person while listening to an educated Egyptian guide tell you the story of the past adds rich and colorful layers to it all, bringing the experience to life in a way that is impossible unless you’re there. Tour guiding is not just a job in Egypt. It is a respected profession and in our guide’s case required a college education. Her name is Ola and she speaks perfect English and has the ability to organize our schedules to the minute without a single glitch, as well as tell us in descriptive story-form the history of everything Egyptian.

And now I have a whole new world of God’s children to know and love personally and to bless and pray with. The world is a much smaller place for me and God is an even bigger Force. The words Eternal and Unlimited have much more meaning for me now.  This isn’t because God has changed, but because I have.

is salaam ‘alaykum  peace be upon you.

LET’S TAKE GOD’S HAND

Together, let’s take the hand of God and let Him lift us up above the fray. And from this higher place, let’s rest in His Love and in His Light and smile with relief and gratitude that our suffering is done and Love has taken its place this moment and every single time we are willing to choose it.

GOD DOES NOT EXPECT PERFECTION, ONLY A LITTLE WILLINGNESS AND HE WILL DO THE REST.

May you walk in peace today knowing you are blessed and a blessing in the world.
