Before us lies a door.  Beautiful it is and filled with light. On one side lives the world we know. We busy ourselves about our ordinary days never trying to go beyond what is familiar to us. Now and then we glance up at the door and even see its light. We sense there is something special on the other side. But we put that from our minds and trudge on in the world we know with the life in which we have grown accustomed.  We’re way too busy for nonsense like doors of light or other impractical ideas. We’re trying to survive here. And besides it probably isn’t even real.

Over time we become tired of all that fills our days and nights.  Tired and even sick.  Tired of it all.  Sick of it all.

One day we find we cannot go another step.  We sit down and realize how weary we have grown of trying to carry the weight of the world we know. It’s just too much and nothing ever changes or gets better except for brief moments here and there.  Our life has become a burden.  Our judgments weigh on us.  We know we’re right, but what’s the good if no one else does?  So many opinions; so many different ways of seeing.  Why can’t everyone see the world as we do? Then maybe things would finally change. It’s so confusing.

Then a whispered thought comes to our mind. “What if I’m mistaken?” We quickly shut that thought out for that would mean our whole life is a lie. 

The door still stands before us, its constant, quiet light more bright than ever.  Something deep within us begins to stir and shift. As if a part of us that has been soundly sleeping is trying to awaken.  We wonder just what that door is hiding? We walk close but don’t turn the knob. We’re afraid and anyway we’re sure the door is locked. And we don’t have the key.  “It’s only a prayer away.” We hear the whisper in our ear.  We say the only thing that comes to mind, “Help me.”  And there it is, a shining gold key in the door.

We’re still afraid but our desire for something better becomes stronger than our fear. We turn the key and the door opens almost of its own accord.  At first we’re disappointed. It looks the same on the other side.  There is our life as always.  Same home, same family, same job.  But wait, something is different. Finally we realize it’s us. We’re different. We’re smiling. We’re laughing. Our eyes are calm, our hearts are light. We’re singing a little song.  We spend time listening rather than lamenting. Being still feels very comfortable and comforting.

What’s changed? we wonder. Then it hits us.  We are no longer carrying the weight of our life. We’ve let it go.  Surrendered it somehow.  We feel light and free.  We have no judgments and no fears.  One Who walks with us is carrying the weight for us.

Now we ask questions before we make decisions. “What would You have me do?  Where would You have me go?  What would You have me say? And to whom?”

Life is simple now. Our hearts have forgiven everyone and everyone’s forgiven us.  Truth walks ahead of us instead of being pushed back into the dark recesses of our minds. All that small, petty thinking that occupied our days on the wrong side of the door seems so silly to us now that we have found the answers to Heaven here on earth.

We’re in no hurry for time is not an issue when we use it for God’s purpose. When we serve God and not our fears our life becomes amazing.

“Today I will trust God as He trusts me.”

If we look into our heart we will see that it isn’t the world we fear. It is Love. We are afraid to trust that God is in charge and will make all the corrections necessary that will lead us to peace and harmony and healing. So in that sense we are not afraid of what we think is happening or will happen, we are afraid that God’s promises are not real. We are terrified that He will drop us from the cliff of our own uncertainty.  And so we make plans. Plans to protect and defend ourselves.  Plans on how to make things happen the way we think they should. Plans to be in the world on our terms instead of His. Human plans, ego plans, fear-filled plans. 

If we really trusted God we would feel all our burdens lifted and would at last understand that no matter how it looks or feels it must be all right, because God’s laws are governing this world, quietly waiting to transform chaos into calm, panic into peace.  As soon as we let Him. 

If we trusted in God instead of trying to “fix” things with our narrow understanding and our fear-filled little minds, all that is not of God would fall away and this world would be a different place. Now, would we live in confidence.  Now would joy be our constant companion. Now would we at last be healed and free.

Let’s join hands and take the leap from the precipice of limitation and dark thinking; from sad thoughts and worry and anxiety and watch with awe and gratitude as a miracle occurs.  What we will find is when we place our trust in God, we cannot fall for we have been given wings.

Let’s place our trust in God and take a flying leap because “God’s trust in you is limitless.” A Course In Miracles

“I want to see the world through the eyes of God today.”

How we see ourselves and our brothers and sisters is our perception based upon a very limited view point. Most of us have only five senses at our disposal.  

“Only God knows all about all.”

Each one of us can see the same thing from a different lens and our interpretations and judgments and opinions will differ.

“Only God knows all about all.”

We all see the world through our own tunnel vision based upon our history and our beliefs and past and present experiences.

“Only God knows all about all.”

Nothing here is constant except change. This is a world of change. God is the only constant.

“Only God knows all about all.”

Our entire life here is based upon opinions that we interpret as facts. And even that can be altered in an instant as we re-think the facts or are given different or additional bits of  information.

“Only God knows all about all.”

Everything that brings us pleasure and everything that disturbs our peace, does so because of the way we interpret it. It is impossible not to have opinions in this world, but it is possible to lift those opinions, beliefs and judgments up to God and ask for help to see ourselves, our lives and the world in a different way, a new way, a better way.

“Only God knows all about all.”

God knows the entire back story of each of us which we seldom do, nor do we ask, “How did this person get so wounded?” or “Why am I in such pain?”

“Only God knows all about all.”

God will take our judgments and fears and redefine them for us, correct and purify them and then return them to us filled with love. We will still have opinions and perceptions, but now they will come from a place of love and we will be at peace because … 

“Only God knows all about all.”

I will be still today and let LOVE in because …

It is important that we face our fear thoughts. Once we understand our power for unhappiness is ours, we can begin to understand that our power for happiness is our choice as well.

Our decision to value our hurts and fears from the past blocks God’s Light and keeps us from our miracles. If we doubt that we are valuing our hurts and fears, we only need to listen to ourselves. What stories are we telling the world? What pain and anger and suffering are we still clinging to from yesterday and from years ago?

Instead of judgment we must want forgiveness. Instead of hopelessness we must want joy. Only our self-imposed barriers to God’s Love block His Answers and His Healing.  We need do nothing but simply be willing to be happy and God will do the rest. In order to be open to His Voice, we must be willing to change our life’s story from one of a sad and sorry past to one of hope and trust in each moment – beginning now.

It is the power of God within us that gives us the confidence and the opportunity to understand that we are so much more than our fears. If we take His hand, He will lead us gently from the darkness that we have made and into the Light that He has Created as our Holy Truth.  Now, we can forgive the past, let go of our anxiety about the future and rest in the light of this holy moment with Him. Through forgiveness and surrender we are opening for ourselves a channel of pure Love. It is from this point of Love, this Divine Love within our own mind, where true and permanent healing originates and from there that we must make our resolutions for change.

And now we walk through the world, an instrument of peace and a teacher of joy. Now we are ready to learn to be a healed healer and we can bring peace and health and happiness with us everywhere we go.

When we look at the world, what do we see? All the pain, and suffering? Or the truth, that God is real and everything and everyone can be lifted into His Light for healing? Do we join the world in its misery by adding our negative energy of fear and judgment to the chaos? Or can we choose a better way?

What if we join forces with God by sending kind and loving thoughts into the world every chance we get? What if we lay our fears down and pray, “God help us.” What if we go about our day giving kindness and compassion to everyone we meet. One way we can do this is by dispensing random acts of kindness like small ribbons of light and joy before the feet of everyone.

What if we become part of the solution by smiling gently at anyone who needs a smile and offering a happy greeting to friends and strangers alike? What if we are part of the solution, by choosing to withhold judgment of what we see and hear on the news and instead send a healing prayer to everyone involved? Love is energy that heals. Fear is energy that keeps the world in darkness. We have the capacity for both. We can get angry and righteous and choose to make the world the problem of those we see as guilty. Or we can take responsibility for our part in the mess by remembering our anger and our fear are just as powerful for keeping the world in pain as those who are actually acting out the drama and the violence. We may not want to believe that our thoughts are that powerful. After all we’re not doing anything to hurt anyone. But when we consider that we are creations of the greatest Power of all, is it too farfetched to believe that we are contributing to the chaos by keeping our thoughts in chaos? In a lesser way, perhaps, but contributors nonetheless. And there are billions of us joining forces in judgment and in fear.

The answer is forgiveness. We must, one person at a time, forgive ourselves for our mistakes and ask God to heal us so we can be instruments of peace instead of pain. It seems almost impossible to withhold our judgments and be free of ego fear. The natural thing seems to be to judge the world and to believe we know what everyone else should be doing differently. This desire to rule through our egos instead of allowing God’s Love in is very powerful and entrenched into our way of thinking and being in the world.

And so we cannot do it alone. God is always with us to help us change our thoughts whenever we open our mind and heart and turn to Him. For every fear thought there is a corresponding Love thought. We must be vigilant in watching how we react and respond to the world and those in our lives. And every time we find ourselves responding with negativity, we can stop ourselves even in mid sentence or mid thought and go somewhere quiet and say, “God, I give my mistaken thoughts to you. Please help me to be your channel and your tool for healing in the world.” Or “God, please help me to see this through Your Eyes so I can change my mind.”

Working through Love instead of fear is not easy. But it’s necessary if we really want a better world. Sometimes, we can only pray, “God help me.” And yet that is the most powerful prayer there is.

We are not alone. Powerful Guides walk with us. Let’s take Their hands and allow ourselves to be lifted above the fray where we can truly be a healer for God in the world. And when we find ourselves in the middle of the mess again, which we will, let’s take God’s hand again. And then again. And then again.

Every experience and every moment is another opportunity to choose again. And to remember the powerful truth – that we are not alone. God and His Angels walk with us and His will for us is only peace and happiness and nothing else. When we turn to God for help we are simply aligning our will with His. And there is nothing more powerful that we can do for the healing of the world.

“… the story shows that with God all things are possible.” A Course In Miracles

Let’s listen to the story we tell ourselves and others and then watch carefully as our life unfolds.

We hear victim stories all around us and we tell them about ourselves to others over and over with few variations. So and so did this to me and now I’m miserable because of them.  This is a common story. It’s the other person’s fault that I have a lousy relationship, a terrible life and a boring unsatisfying job or no job or no relationship at all. Or we tell the, “I screwed up” story, where we think our mistakes define us and we can never be forgiven. We trap ourselves in a mudslide of guilt and grief. We tend to like the drama of our story, believing that this is who we are. We feel our suffering is what makes us interesting and even heroic in a way. And because the world is the way it is, there is always someone to blame for our problems. Our parents, our partners, our co-workers, our siblings, our bosses and even ourselves. Sometimes we make a feeble effort to change our story, but we always go back to it. It’s like an addiction.  A bad habit. We’re addicted to our story.

But there are people who don’t choose to live that way.  I call them the Hopeful.  The Glass Half Full. The Light at the End of the Tunnel. No matter how life drags them around they seem to see something better than a tale of woe and pain. And even though they experience drama and challenge similar to the rest of us, they remain happy and positive.  Hopeful.  Hopeful for a better future.  A willingness to learn from their mistakes.  A desire to be a better person and have a better life; to experience a gentler, kinder world flowing with forgiveness and harmony and balance. To our untrained eye, life seems so much easier for these hopeful ones. They are the lucky ones, we decide. Most of the time we don’t even see that they are experiencing much of the same challenges we do. We don’t realize the difference between them and us is that they have learned to ride the waves while we are fighting them, dodging them or drowning in them. All of which are exhausting and disheartening.

Those that choose the drama I call the “right fighters.”  Instead of trying to find a peaceful resolution through quiet listening to a Higher Power or through gentleness and kindness toward themselves and others, the right fighters put on their armor and lift their swords or raise their voices and start lashing out as they try to fix the world through anger and self righteousness and fear. They make their story even more dramatic than it needs to be because to them it’s a better story. We see this in the media all the time; the more dramatic and tragic, dark and dangerous, the better the story. 

Let’s take a moment and quiet our dark thoughts and listen to the stories of the hopeful ones. They’re the ones we can learn from. They are easy to recognize because nothing seems to get them down for long. A wave knocks them over and they stand back up. Instead of stories of victimhood, their stories are of quiet triumph and gentle correction, of gratitude and willingness to set their problems aside to be helpful to others. And even laughing at the insanity. Less interesting perhaps, but definitely more satisfying. Stories of hope and promise and forgiveness are what will make the world a better place. Stories of amazing miracles and seeing the light in the darkest moment, is what will help us change our minds about how we want to live our life.

So the moral of this story is that to have a happier life, we need to start telling a happier story.

It may take some work to extricate us from our addiction to drama and victimhood. First we have to want to see ourselves and our life experiences differently. We may even refuse to believe that there is another way to live. Stubbornness and closed mindedness are common symptoms of the drama story tellers. And we mustn’t judge them for their choice to tell a drama story, for that will only strengthen their resolve to defend and believe in their pain. The only way we can be helpful is to be living, breathing examples of hope and healing and laughter and love.  Let’s let our story tell the story and shed the light for others to follow if they wish.  And we will have powerful Guides to lead us on our new path. God and His Angels will welcome our new and better story and will gladly help us live it in a way that is gently and quietly helpful for all. 

Just focus and affirm … “Above all else I want to see things differently.” A Course In Miracles And you will be led on a new path filled with hope, shining with light and bursting with laughter. For those who aren’t ready to see things differently, God and His Angels will quietly and gently wait with us until we are.

Sad thoughts
Extreme conditions
Violence
Injustice
Righteous defenses (our own and others)
Scarcity
Separateness and loneliness
Insane beliefs (our own and others)
War (internal and external)
Judgments
Sickness

Lets pat all of this into a tight ball and stuff it into a garbage bag and fling the bag into a hot air balloon. And as we watch our pain and fear thoughts lift up and float away, we will envision the balloon of dark energy transformed into a light filled star of hope and healing for everyone.  

We are now designers of miracles and the world is a brand new place.  Divine energy will fill the space where fear once blocked our way and we will remember the truth. God is our only Ruler; His laws our saving grace.

And if we fall back into our old thinking, we can do this exercise again. And then again and once again. Until the day when the balloon of pain and suffering is finally gone forever.  And we are filled with light and nothing else remains in our minds, our hearts, our lives, our world but peace and love and joy.

“The sign of Christmas is a star, a light in darkness. See it not outside yourself, but shining in the Heaven within …” A Course In Miracles

PEACE ON EARTH

There was a small star in a black sea of sky whose light was very dim. Dark thoughts, heavy sadness, and crushing guilt from earth made it an overwhelming challenge for the little star to keeps its light alive. It continued to try valiantly, but the effort was exhausting.

One night just before its fading glow was extinguished for good, the star heard a sound. It listened closely and it heard it again. Sweet and gentle, and ever so lovely, the sound penetrated the heavy mist of fear that filled the world. It was the voices of a small boy and girl singing a lovely little hymn to each other in a small and dingy room with ice crystals clinging to the inside walls. The brother and sister had curled themselves up together in a thin and threadbare blanket. They were home alone. Home was a small apartment with no heat, but they didn’t seem to notice as their voices rose in harmony with one another. If anyone would have seen them, they would have been amazed by their shining eyes and happy smiles.

They had nothing in the worlds’ terms, but in their eyes they had everything. They had each other.

The star focused on the innocence and love that flowed from the hearts and into the song of these two children. And as it did so, its dim light began to brighten. Then softly and from a distance, the star heard more voices joining these and then more and more. Each voice belonged to a child. The star continued to focus only on the voices until it could hear nothing, but children singing in different languages, in different keys with different melodies that somehow blended and harmonized with each other and with the two original children in the cold apartment. The love that circled the world from the hearts of the children gave power and strength to the star until its light shone clear and filled the sky. Soon the dark sea of night disappeared into the light. The light from one small star.

You are the star. 
You are the children.
You are the song. 
You are the light. 
You are the innocence. 
You are the love.

Listen to your heart, focus on your song, see only your light and you will realize

Go inside your mind and see a tree, glorious and tall, its branches raised majestically, its trunk spanning the world. This tree has no leaves and yet it is full and beautifully abundant with not a bare spot to be seen. It cannot perish or change its hues which already are all the colors of the Universe.  Nor can what grows upon it ever be diminished or forgotten.

Go closer and lean your weight against it. Rest in its shade. Look up into its branches and see what fills them.  Do you recognize its fruit?  They are all the miracles, large and small, that belong to you.  See them fastened to the tree like lovely ornaments polished to a perfect sheen.

Every loving thought you’ve ever had is hanging there, blessed and saved for all eternity. There are your miracles of kind acts preserved for you in holy purity. The branches of the tree bear all the memories of each time your heart was opened to another, as are all the times your eyes have seen the truth of someone else; the innocence within their soul. As well, your gentleness and grace and every tear you’ve wiped from someone’s face or shed in loving sympathy for them. Every child you’ve ever held and every hand you’ve ever clasped as you helped a brother or a sister up and back upon their path. Every time you have forgiven yourself or someone else is a light upon the tree. Each time you trusted God instead of fear is a gift that He holds dear and keeps in place for you within the branches of this tree.

Every time you celebrated life instead of death is suspended there. Also every dark and painful moment you chose another way, opening your mind to embrace the holy healing of happy joy and laughter. Every prayer you’ve ever prayed where you put God’s will ahead of yours and every time that you grew still on His behalf are all firmly on the tree.

No matter what mistakes you make they are nothing in the face of all your miracles held fast upon God’s Tree of Truth where they will stay forever, shining their holy, healing light upon the earth. These words cannot convey how precious are your miracles that God has saved for you.  And when the time should come that you look back upon your life, be sure that these and only these are all that you and He will see.

When life is too painful for whatever reason
And your mind and heart feel confused and
A fog settles over you,
Think of this …

There is beauty in the fog
As it softly enfolds the world
In its hazy dampness.
There is beauty in the fog,
As it lets you rest in its muted
And muffling embrace.

As you rest in fog’s embrace 
Feel yourself letting go and letting God.
And recognize that you are participating 
In true forgiveness. 

And then when the sharpness and light
Of the world come into focus once again,
You will find yourself feeling stronger for
Having allowed yourself a time of rest
As you surrender all things 
Into the beauty of the fog.

And God’s healing Love.
